Since I first saw it, The Blackcoat’s Daughter has become one of my favorite horror films, and I have been singing it’s praises to anyone who will listen, even going so far as naming it my favorite horror film of 2016. With it’s official release finally approaching, A24 films recently unveiled a new trailer which we posted here . They also included a poster I personally felt was serviceable but nor really as cool as the film deserves. The Blackcoat’s Daughter is a great horror film so I wanted to create something for fun that I felt was not only more interesting but represented it just a bit better. Creating posters for films is one of my favorite things to do, so I wanted to take a crack at it.
Unfortunately there is only so much material available from the film to work from. So I had to utilize an image from the stills they released. I chose what I felt was the strongest yet least “spoilery” image available so as to maintain some of the films mystery. Usually when making posters for existing films I like to start from scratch and bring something new to the table. However in this cast I had to work with what I had and decided the simple image surrounded by encroaching darkness via cracks would work well. The films snowy setting inspired the bit of white creeping into the edges. I didn’t want to go overboard with it, but I feel it adds just enough to help frame the image. After going sharing the image with my buddy Matt for input, we opted to go with the desaturated look and let the one orangeish color stand out.
Overall it was something I just began messing around with for fun out of my affinity for the film, and thought I might not create something I kept since I had so little to work with. In the end though I was actually really happy with the results and feel my design works rather well. I hope you all like what I did here and hope that when the opportunity arises that you check out The Blackcoat’s Daughter. It is a true horror film, through and through. Pun intended.
